PC PhoneHome

PC PhoneHome is a nifty piece of software that can help recover a lost or stolen laptop. Just download and install, and if your computer walks away, the folks at Brigadoon Security will know where it is next time it tries to connect to the internet.

Sorry Mac users, Columbia has only purchased the Windows license thus far.

Battery Recalls

Nothing gets the year started like battery recalls! Be sure to get your laptop battery replaced if it's been recalled.

Apple has recalled certain lithium-ion rechargeable batteries found in 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook, and 15-inch PowerBook G4 computers. Apple has initiated an exchange program and will provide customers with a replacement battery, free of charge. Visit Apple's Battery Exchange Program to learn more.

Dell has recalled certain batteries sold with Dell Latitude™, Inspiron™, XPS™ and Dell Precision Mobile Workstation™ notebook computers. These batteries, under rare conditions, may overheat and pose a risk of fire. Check with the Dell Battery Return Program to see if your computer may be affected.

Attn: 100 More Printing Pages!

From CUIT:

All undergraduates now have 100 extra pages for printing each semester, thanks to requests by the Columbia College and Engineering student councils. In any week, once the regular 100-page quota is used up, any additional pages printed will be deducted from the printing reserve. As always, students can check how many pages they have remaining via CUIT.

This printing reserve is being piloted for the Spring 2006 semester.

Watch Those IMs!

Never click on a link in an AIM profile or instant messaging window without asking what it is first! Links to viruses are often disguised as links your friend would send you, such as "Click to see my pictures!" links or commonly-known sites like geocities.com. When you click on them, you download a virus to your computer and the virus implants such links in your profile and may send them to your friends without your permission. Trust me, you really don't want that middle school buddy asking questions when they get their first IM from you in 10 years and it says "Nude pics! OMG!" So be very careful when clicking on any links in AIM.

If you do get an AIM virus, you can try the AIM fix at Jayloden.com. If you have been mac-captured as a result of the virus, however, you will need to reformat your computer and follow the standard mac-capture procedure.

Open Office

If you're swamped with post-break papers you may want to try "Open Office," a free office suite that can save in Microsoft Word .doc format. Open Office is a great alternative if you don't own Microsoft Word or had to reformat* your computer and forgot your Microsoft Word CD at home.

*To avoid this keep your firewalls on and your anti-virus software running at all times! Also make sure to download your Windows updates. See more in the Mandatory Computer Setup Instructions.

Our Network Device Policy

Barnard College provides one network jack per student in the residence halls to
allow resident students to connect their computers to the Barnard network.
Residents are not permitted to plug any other devices (hub, router, access point,
Xbox, Airport) into a Barnard College network jack unless they obtain a Network
Device Approval Form signed by Andrew Blaner, Associate Director, Academic
Technologies.

During the last academic year, privately installed network devices have interfered
with network service in the residence halls. An improperly configured device can
block nearby computers from connecting to the Barnard network. This affects the
academic work of your fellow students and is therefore considered a serious
infraction.

Students who install network devices without approval will be removed from the
Barnard network. The student who registers a network device will be held accountable
for any problems or activity related to connections through that access point. The
College is not responsible for the performance of these devices.

Appointments for inspection and approval of a network device will be scheduled
beginning September 9. To schedule an appointment, fill out the online form at
http://www.barnard.edu/resnet/netdevice.html. We will arrange an appointment via email.

Welcome back!

Take a look around our website to learn more about what kind of computer and computer equipment to bring to campus, how to connect to the internet, and more information on how to get the most out of your computer, safely.

If you have a computer question, call the Help Desk at x4-7172, or bring your laptop to Office Hours to speak with a Residential Computing Assistant.

All new and returning students who bring a computer to campus MUST follow the Mandatory Computer Setup instructions before connecting to the internet, or else your computer may be infected and you will lose access to the internet.

Student Email Upgrade

In order to facilitate and accomplish the transition of the student e-mail system to its new servers and improved architecture, student e-mail will be unavailable for 24 hours from 7:00AM June 1, 2005 until 7:00AM June 2, 2005. This will also affect eBear logins, personal web pages and club web pages which will be unavailable during the same time period.

Incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered properly once the system is back on-line. No e-mail will be lost by this process.

Once the system is restored, webmail users who have changed any of the default preferences will have to reset them. Preference changes include anything altered in the webmail Options, such as color schemes, signatures, languages, or message filters. These changes will be lost during the transition. Passwords and logins, however, will remain the same.

Email!

Every beautiful Barnard woman has her own style. Similarly, each and every one of us has our own way of sending email. Some of us prefer Webmail with an Alien Glow; others stick to the stark text of Telent, while still others use a myriad of entirely different programs to access their email. Whatever your personal preference, you may find the following useful:

Webmail
- Accessed through webmail.barnard.edu using one's Barnard User ID and Barnard password. Webmail features customizable colors and languages, is easy to use, and is available through any browser.

Telnet
- Accessed by going to the Webmail and Telnet page and clicking on 'Telnet for Students.' Type your Barnard User ID and Barnard password at the prompts and then type 'pine' and hit enter. Pine gives you quick access your mail through a series of provided one-letter commands.

Clients
- There are numerous programs from which to choose, and some may be pricey while others are yours free of charge. Only when you buy Microsoft Office, for instance, can you obtain Microsoft Outlook. Your computer may come with Apple Mail or Outlook Express. Other options include Mulberry, Netscape 7, Opera, Eudora, Entourage, Thunderbird, and many more that can be found via the world wide web. To set up your client, use our server information and Acis' email instructions. It is best to use IMAP, rather than Pop, because IMAP keeps copies of your emails on the server. If something should happen to your computer, you will still be able to get your emails.
